Abstract:

To address the capacity planning problem for multi-tier server cluster systems, an incremental server allocation heuristic approach called SHISA is pr   oposed to optimize the system throughput performance. Based on a closed queueing network model, these performance-related states are exploited as the he  uristic to guide the ＂most-profitable＂ tier selection for incremental server addition. Comparisons of different heuristic policies are studied with re  espect to the effectiveness and sensitivity to the number of tiers and the number of servers.
