Abstract:
An efficient mode selection algorithm is proposed to reduce the complexity of the H. 264 encoder. Firstly the smooth region is identified by using the motion vector information. Then the complex region is classified into two types of regions by the coded mode information of the macroblocks (MBs) sur rrounding the current MB. After that we process the different regions with appropriate modes according to their different complexities. Experimental res ults show that the proposed algorithm can save the encoding time up to 63% on an average of 0. 15 dB performance degradation that is suitable for real-t ime aoolications.
