Abstract:

Customizing application-specific instructions is important to the application-specific instruction set processor （ASIP） design process. Automating t he design process can shorten the development cycle of a product. But the current technologies make this process only semi-automatic, and the impacts of area and power are not fully considered when selecting instructions. In this paper we present a fully automatic instruction set extension system for ASIP. In our system, the cost of power and area is considered as an important factor, The experimental results show that the new instructions can bring 4.  7% to 16. 7% improvement while keeping area and power almost unchanged.
